Without doubt one of the pop stars who has grabbed the most headlines over the past couple of years is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, better known to the world as the outrageous Lady Gaga. Her first album, The Face, was released on both sides of the Atlantic in 2008 and both the album and the singles released from it became instant hits. Tracks such as Poker Face and Just Dance hit the top of the charts in countries across the globe and were constantly played on the radio. Lady Gaga has toured extensively to promote this album and the follow up releases and as such as gained a reputation as one of the hardest working women in pop.

One of the main thing that sets Lady Gaga apart from other pop singers such as Rihanna and Katy Perry is her love of the outrageous and the weird and wacky outfits she is often seen wearing. Just like Madonna in the 1980s, the world is waiting to see what she will come up with next.

Right from the start, Lady Gaga has dressed in a highly unconventional way. This strategy has been very successful in getting her noticed, and helping her stand out in the crowd of other female performers which make up the pop industry today. Her typical outfits involve lots of lace on her legs or body, face coverings and large hats. Her outfits are half way between edgy fashion and pantomine costume, but they are always attention grabbing and a real talking point. According to her management team, Lady Gaga has not been moulded into any fashion niche and has not been advised to wear certain things. She herself is the driving force behind her constantly changing image and she has been very successful in creating herself as a global brand.

Lady Gaga’s most attention grabbing outfit to date is without doubt the dress made of real meat which she wore to the MTV music awards in September 2010, guaranteeing her front page coverage in all the major newspapers and top spots on all of the gossip websites the following morning. Although the dress was quite clearly a statement of some sort, Lady Gaga kept the air of mystery about her by refusing to say exactly what it was a statement about, commenting to curious journalists that the meaning of the dress was open to interpretation.

Fashion experts are divided on what the dress means, some thinking it was a simple anti-fashion statement, others claiming Gaga was commenting from a feminist point of view and demonstrating that much of the media treats women in the spotlight as if they were pieces of meat. Others think it was a statement about decay, or an attempt to push the vegetarian agenda. Many months after the event, Lady Gaga stated that the dress was a reference to her “beef” with the US military and the fact that they exclude gay people from joining the Armed Forces. Whatever the truth of the matter about the meaning of the dress, it was certainly one of the fashion talking points of the year and was named Time Magazine’s biggest fashion statement of 2010.

Lady Gaga has an army of avid fans, which she affectionately called her Little Monsters. The Little Monsters follow gaga across the world and many obsessively buy anything connected with the singer. For less obsessive fans, or for anyone with a general interest in design or fashion, one of the best things to purchase which encapsulates Lady Gaga and her image is a Lady Gaga poster featuring her in one of her many wacky stage outfits. Lady Gaga posters are attention grabbing and colourful, and will make as much of a statement hanging on a bedroom wall as Lady Gaga does when she is performing on stage. The Lady Gaga posters will also form a record of fashion and will be something interesting to look back on in years to come.
